Update - Pacific Cup 2021 Cancelled
Last week our five Participating Nations met with Tournament organisers to discuss the future of Pacific Cup 2021.
After a long, open forum korero - it was unanimously decided that continuing to prepare for our November Tournament was not practical, fair or realistic.
Pacific Cup 2021 is cancelled.
There are many reasons as to why we’re not in a position to present Pacific Cup as we’d planned, most of which are obvious.
Auckland’s prolonged lockdown has severely impacted our communities’ ability to trial, train and fundraise. The ongoing uncertainty around alert level restrictions has also rendered Pacific Cup as is, mission impossible.
So, in short - Pacific Cup 2021 will not go ahead on November 20 - 21, and we will work towards bringing back the tournament in 2022 - plans for which are already underway.
We need to be clear, we’ve used the word cancelled - but that only applies to the Tournament component of our planning.
We are still committed to celebrating our culture & community through sport in November.
As organisers & Nations, we are working together to present a FREE Pasifika Festival day in lieu of our Tournament, to ensure we continue to serve the key purpose of the Pacific Cup.
We will share more information on this in the coming weeks, once we have firmed up plans.
We’re grateful for the ongoing support from sponsors, many of whom have opted to continue backing our commitment to the growth and development of our pacific people and wider touch community.
To our Nations, Auckland Touch Association, Counties Manukau Touch, Touch New Zealand, Auckland Council, Sports Chaplaincy NZ, Local Gecko Productions, Pakuranga United Rugby, 7th Touch and the many volunteers who have given so much during the last year of planning and preparation, thank you.
The Pacific Cup will return in 2022.
